Course Description

Effective management of human resource is essential for the provision of quality care. Emphasis will be given to leadership and managerial styles needed for successful human resource management.
The Leadership component will cover concepts and theories of leadership and will explore the leadership-management continuum highlighting the difference types of leadership; change, conflict management strategies.
The Human resource management component provides participants with knowledge and skills for managing, training and motivating health workers.This will cover:

(a) management of entry

(b) management of stay

(c) management of exit. This course will furthermore explore the broader context within which health human resource management happens and some of the major challenges facing HRM today, both within and beyond organisations, e.g. HR planning and HIV/AIDS related innovations such as task shifting.

Course objectives

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Discuss leadership concepts and theories.
  • Distinguish between different types of leadership and leadership styles.
  • Apply the principles of human resources management related to management of entry, stay and exit.
  • Discuss and propose solutions to current and emerging challenges related to human resources management
